Festivals are part of one’s custom, culture and tradition. They are there for us to celebrate, helping us forget our mundane daily routine. Celebrating a community event gives us some momentary, mental and physical relaxation which frees us from the shackles of monotonous work. Festivals are like glue that keeps us attached to relationships in society. When we are together as family members, friends, and individuals in society, it creates a sense of unity which gives us the strength to face all kinds of challenges in life.
Festivals are an expression of community identity which celebrate and sustain glorious heritage, culture and traditions. They are meant to create special moments and keep individuals attached to relationships in society distracting them from the monotony of day to day life, connecting them with family concerns, past legends, contemporary knowledge and traditions, which are passed on to the next generation. They bring social and economic benefits to the host community and at the same time may result in some negative consequences. As they have become an important part of our life this symposium intends to bring together interested researchers to share ideas and findings on festivals and celebrations while having a special section on balik kampung (homecoming) as a collective practice in a multicultural society in the hope of generating sustainable interest in multi-ethnic festivity as a common ground for social integration. We plan to publish selected papers as a contribution to a discourse on tourism as a tool for national integration.
